M.F.Husain, a well known celebrity artist, gave a new name to Indian Contemporary Art. Born in 1915 at Pandharpur, Maharashtra Husain came to Bombay at the age of 20 and joined J.J.School of Arts. Initially he was painting billboards of Indian cinema to make a living but when he took up painting as an art form, there was no end. He has painted icons of Indian culture, mythological subjects, folk and tribal art and abstract art.
In 1948 he joined the Progressive Arts Group. This group was responsible for the beginning of the era of Indian contemporary art. He is called Picasso of India. His original paintings were auctioned on Sotheby's and Christie's for 6 figures.
